What I Learned Visiting Helvete

On 6 June 2011, Hank, alongside his new band , released their first album. You walk in, and the first room features a wall that functions as a veritable heavy metal history museum. They have a copy of Kill 'Em All signed by Metallica's classic lineup, props from Burzum photo shoots and a sheet dotted with some of Euronymous's blood. The main reason for this was his new lifestyle as a sober family man. As a matter of fact, I befriended a guy I would end up running a record label with, and even received a very friendly and helpful email from the store owner. He claims to have now dealt with his drug addiction problem thanks to the drug rehab program. Despite the rather thorny exterior even a place as grim as Helvete evidenced that black metals 'Us against the world' mentality is ultimately going to keep us all together.

What I Learned Visiting Helvete

The song stayed at 1 for 3 weeks including the Christmas chart for 2009. By visiting the beating heart of the genre I found that not only is there actually is a future for this thing, but there are also a lot of people who just want to turn back the clock. The fact of the matter is that my few hours there reshaped a lot of how I view black metal. They have moved from their old record shop to Helvete. The fact of the matter is that for me at least, Helvete represented everything black metal was in a nutshell. The early work of Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone and Emperor would inspire many Black Metal musicians around the globe.

However, even though the shop didn't last, the Black Metal Scene did. Despite how alienating I make the environment sound it was actually quite the opposite. Fall 2011 he was a judge in Norwegian Idol. The band formed in the late 1980s and put out a few records before disbanding in 1998 when Husby's addiction made him unable to perform. You get to see how the bedrock has been carved and shaped by the forces of nature — a natural wonder. It served as a strangely encouraging reminder that even in places that seem destined to let the scene grow there will always be oppression and distaste from the mainstream. Visiting Helvete was a veritable rite of passage for a seventeen-year-old Matt Bacon, and an experience that still resonates with me today. Black Metal has even become one of Norway's unique cultural exports. In fact, it may be even more edgy to like black metal in Norway simply because the crimes we associate with the genre still resonate in the national consciousness. Tourist pamphlets mention the church burnings and the guide on our boat through the fjords even brought it up.

It showed the nihilistic suffering of the genre as well as the hope it embodies. There is now even a Black Metal Museum in the basement of the shop. Here he worked at in , as well as working as a presenter at Moskenesradioen, a local radio station. Medieval weapons adorned the walls along with posters of bands, the windows were blackened, the lighting was dim and there was a gloomy ambience enhanced by lit candles. It functions as living proof that this whole thing is a lot bigger than I think that many of realize, but it also showed me that this is a genre under siege.

In addition to the potholes, the nature park is home to Dalbakken Fjellgard — a mountain farm with grazing animals. The largest is 40 metres deep, and has a 25 metre diameter. Considering developer 's Swedish heritage, Helvete is a reference to the Swedish word for hell. What I think that Helvete teaches us is that there is still a very real fanaticism behind this music, even if we probably won't be burning down any churches in its name in the near future. Of course — none of this gets at what I really learned from hanging out in those unsacred halls.

Helvete made me understand that not only is this a crucial part of the black metal landscape these days, but also that that may very well be the direction the genre is taking, especially in regards to the more 'high art' take on the music that we see so often in this day and age. It was a meeting place for Black Metal Musicians who spread the scene through exchanging tapes and promoting shows. Helvete though is an experience in and of itself. The couple have a daughter together, who was born on December 21, 2008. Husby went through detox while living at the island in , Norway. It showed me that what we have going on here in the States, while maybe not ideal, is certainly better than nothing and is helping to build towards a better tomorrow. Over 20 years after the shop's closing, it was reopened by new owners, Neseblod Records.

His biography was released in Norway October 2012, written by famous writer and poet Havard Rem, where he speaks openly about his life so far.
